FAQs

Layflat.com AG manufactures machines which use innovative technology solutions used in photobook binding. Our machines fall under two main categories — Binding and Further Equipment.
Layflat bookbinding technology is the most advanced form of bookbinding used today. There are two types of layflat binding — Classic layflat binding and V-shape layflat binding. Classic layflat binding is suitable for one-sided printed sheets where the reverse sides of each page are glued to the next, creating a seamless uninterrupted display when the book is opened. V-shape layflat binding is our patented technology designed for double-sided printed sheets. When double-sided printed books are opened, they have a curvy butterfly-like appearance which blocks the display of content around the centre i.e. the page gutter. V-shape layflat binding technology forms a V-shape binding in the spine of the book which solves this problem and gives a seamless layflat appearance when the book is opened.
By using layflat bookbinding technology, photobooks can have a completely flat and continuous display when they open rather than an interrupted display around the centre due to the page gutter.
The most common type of binding is perfect binding. It works by applying an adhesive to the spine of gathered pages. However, perfectly bound books cannot be fully opened and there is loss of visual content around the gutter of the two-page spread. Unlike perfectly bound books, layflat bound books can fully open as well as display a continuous and seamless display without any content getting blocked due to the page gutter.
Under Layflat.com AG’s “Binding Equipment” category, there are two main series — LF Series and VS Series. LF Series is suitable for simplex or single-sided printed sheets as it carries out Classic layflat binding. VS Series is suitable for duplex or double-sided printed sheets as it carries out the patented V-shape layflat binding.
Layflat binding technology can be used for a variety of books such as corporate publications, art books, and cookbooks. Classic layflat binding should be used for simplex or single-sided sheets while V-shape layflat binding should be used for duplex or double-sided sheets.
